Apostleship of Prayer celebrates 100 years

The Apostleship of Prayer of the Parish of St. Fabian, Pope and Martyr celebrated its 100th Foundation Anniversary last 28 December. Since 1908, the parishioners had organized themselves to observe and spread the practices of the Apostleship of Prayer as well as the spread of the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

The program to celebrate the anniversary started with a prayer by Sis. Salome B. Sison, the Vice-President, followed by the singing of the Lupang Hinirang led by Sis. Leticia Z. Somintac. The Parish Priest, Fr. Oliver E. Mendoza, welcomed the members and the guests of the celebration. Mrs. Alicia Z. Gubatan introduced the Guest of Honor and Speaker, Msgr. Rafael S. Magno, Jr, Vicar General and the Parish Priest of the St. John the Evangelist Parish (Dagupan City). He was also the former parish priest of San Fabian for 16 years.

A Eucharistic celebration capped the whole affair with Msgr. Renato P. Mayugba, DD, as the celebrant and homilist.

The following are the Officers of the Apostleship of Prayer of San Fabian Parish: Mrs. Filomena Z. Sagun, President; Mrs. SAlome B. Sison, Vice-President, Ms. Francisca S. Zambrana, Secretary, Ms. Nunila S. Quiros, Treasurer, with Mrs. Paciencia E. Verzosa and Ms Lourdes L. Patungan as Advisers.

Grateful families

Some of the pictures of the happy and grateful families who received the gifts from the generous hearts of families of San Fabian Parish!

Famiy Gift Giving 2009

The parish once again embarked on a gift giving program for the least fortunate in the parish. The appeal for gifts to families by families was made by the parish priest, Fr. Oliver E. Mendoza, on the first day of the nine day Misa de Gallo. "So many of us are now feeling the hardships and difficulties brought about the economic crisis. Yet, there are still so many among us who are in a more difficult situation than in what we are. They are the ones calling for our help!" Thus the appeal of Fr. Mendoza. "Give. Share this Christmas," he further said.

The response was overwhelming as many picked from the basket containing the names of the families who will receive the "family gifts". The family-recipients were picked from the different barangays of the parish; families who are most in need; families who could barely cope with the daily grind of life.

The last gifts were given to the parish on Christmas day. The first batch of gifts were distributed to the families on 26 December. The gift giving would continue until 29 December. Fr. Oliver Mendoza, Bro. Tony Supremido, the BEC coordinator, several youth ministers and Bro. Bernie Solis who generously lent his driving services and his truck, personally gave the gifts to the family recipients.

San Fabian Parish hosts the Youth Ministers' Assembly

The Parish of San Fabian hosted the biennial Archdiocesan Youth Ministers' Assembly last 5-7 December 2008. Almost 200 youth ministers from the different parishes of the Archdiocese gathered together to asses and plan the Archdiocesan youth programs for the next two years. The assembly was headed by Rev. Fr. Manuel S. Bravo, Jr., the Youth Apostolate Director and Sis. Janice Hebron, the Archdiocesan Youth Coordinator. The delegates were welcomed by the different host-families in the parish.

Many of the host-families expressed positive and uplifting experiences with the youth ministers who stayed with them even for just two days. These host-families responded generously to the appeal of the parish priest, Fr. Oliver E. Mendoza, to open their doors to the delegates.

The theme of the assembly was: "... the word of God lives in you." (1 John 2,1). At the end these youth ministers have but one thing in their hearts: " I am a Youth Minister, drawing and sharing life in God's Word, witnessing to the world."

Msgr. Renato P. Mayugba, DD, the Auxiliary Bishop of Lingayen-Dagupan celebrated the opening mass on 5 December, together with the host families and the youth delegates.

The youth ministers proceeded to the Parish of the Holy Cross, Laoac, Pangasinan in the morning of 8 December 2008 fro the launching of the Archdiocesan Youth Day 2009 which will be held in Laoac, Pangasinan.

Most Rev. Renato P. After the 1985 division, creating the new Dioceses of Urdaneta and Alaminos, the Christ the King celebrations were held in the four vicariates of the archdiocese. Formation of BECs through the Devotion of the Divine Mercy

Last 19 July 2008, the first neighborhood community consisting of ten (10) families was formed in the parish. The next day, two other communities were formally introduced to the community apostolate program of the parish, the "Divine Mercy Family Evangelization Program". Five more communities consisting of ten families each were formed. Through this program, the parish hopes to strengthen already existing Basic Ecclesial Communities, and form new communities. The program is hinged on the popular devotion of the parish, which has gained a wide acceptance among the parishioners, the devotion to the Divine Mercy.

The basic understanding of the Basic Ecclesial Community falls on the following, as expressed in the Archdiocesan Pastoral Assembly (1997): it is a small community whose members are united with each other, and to their pastor; it is a community which gathers around the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist and the Sacraments. Most of these communities emerge mostly among the poor at the grassroots.  What then is the "Family Evangelization Program" and what role does the devotion to the Divine Mercy play in the formation of these neighborhood Christian communities?

The first community formed called themselves "Kapayapaan Uno" because the families come from a certain geographical area called "Purok Kapayapaan" in Barangay Anonang. The ten families have been neighbors for a long time, bound by blood relations, primarily, and informal association. Hence, they have known each other for quite a while. The underlying factor that would keep the families together, and hence, that will provide a common, continuing activity of the families is the devotion to the Divine Mercy through the "Visitation of the Image" from one house to the next. The image of the Divine Mercy will stay in one family for a week, after which, it will "visit" the next family. While the image stays in one house, the family is encouraged to pray daily the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and the Three o'clock prayer, both elements of the devotion.
On the first day, the members of the family welcome the Image. Together with the other families, they pray the devotional prayers welcoming the image, as well as the consecration of the family to the Divine Mercy. After a week, the ten families gather together at the home where the image is. They will hold a Bible Sharing, i.e., they share the Word of God. The sharing of the Word is a basic activity of the community. This is also the opportunity for them to discuss relevant issues affecting their lives. It is also in this Prayer/Bible Sharing that Catholic Doctrines and Practices will be discussed and lived. The parish team provides the families with the catechism and questions to be reflected upon for the week.

Typhoon Cosme's Path of Destruction in Pangasinan

22 May, Thursday. Five days after Typhoon "Cosme" unleashed its fury and destroyed millions worth of properties, leaving hundreds homeless, the people of San Fabian, one of the worst hits towns in Pangasinan, are now slowly rebuilding destroyed homes, putting order back to their lives, arousing hope amidst the destruction brought about the strongest typhoons to hit the country in decades.

"In all of my 80 years, I have never experienced so strong a typhoon than this one!" Mrs. Felomina Sagun, long time resident observed. This was the same observation echoed by many of the town's older residents. The howling winds were so devastating that the roof of the almost one third of the front part of the parish church was blown off. Several other parts of the roof were blown off. Masses and other liturgical celebrations are temporarily being celebrated at the Parish Center which suffered only slight damages. The Archdiocesan School of San Fabian suffered almost similar destruction as the parish church. Classrooms of Grades I and VI were partially damaged, as well as the main administration building.

Mass for Truth, Justice and Peace in Dagupan City

4 April, Friday. Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, the Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan, with Msgr. Renato P. Mayugba, DD, the Auxiliary Bishop, of Lingayen-Dagupan presided over the celebration of the Mass for "Truth, Justice and Peace" at the Dagupan City Astrodome, Dagupan City. The mass was attended by the NBN-ZTE witness Engr. Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada with several nuns who accompanied him as part of his campaign to let the truth be known by the majority of the Filipinos regarding the NBN-ZTE deal and his alleged abduction upon his arrival from Hongkong at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last Febraury 2008.

The Social Action Apostolate of the Archdiocese coordinated the whole event. Days before the said event, the streamers put by the Social Action Apostolate at the various strategic places in Dagupan City to announce the mass and to welcome Engr. Lozada to Dagupan City were systematically removed. Two more streamers were put on the night of 3 April, Thursday. Although not removed, they were covered by huge tarpauline streamers derogatory of Engr. Jun Lozada. Dagupan City residents woke up to thousands of anti-Lozada pamphlets scattered along the streets of the City. "We love GMA" were seen hanging all over the metropolis. - more -
